Society Institute “Soros” Foundation has organized and sponsored
Open Forum.Nariman Gasimoglu had in New-York with the audience
of journalists, scholars and human rights activists. His presentation
was dedicated to the religious problems ex-Soviet countries
with Muslim populations have in the transition period of their
history. Touching upon the religious situation in these countries
he focused on the complexity of the issues concerning the regulation
of religious affairs by non-democratic governments. He said
that the complexity of regulation of religious affairs in those
countries is objectively conditioned by the fact that non-interference
into religious affairs of citizens, as provided by secular nature
of the state on one hand, and understanding of quite obvious
and real prospects of religious conscience factor’s effects
upon public-political situation in those countries forces the
official authorities to develop unjustified strict measures
of control over religious situation where the believers suffer
from violations of their rights to freely practice their religious
belief.
