In May 21, 2004 Nariman
Gasimoglu, Chairman of Azerbaijan Center for Religion and Democracy,
vice-chairman of Azerbaijan Popular Front Party was invited
to the US Department of State to meet with Department officials.
Wide discussion was held at the meeting on the current political
situation and state of democratic processes in Azerbaijan. Participants
exchanged opinions on the future of democratic processes and
the role of the USA in promotion of democracy in the country
with the main focus on urgent reforms in the electoral system
which has many shortcomings allowing the authorities to falsify
the outcomes of elections in favor of their political interests
at each electoral level. Nariman Gasimoglu brought their attention
to the religious situation as well which could be explosive
and dangerous if Azerbaijan people would lose the hope for changes
in the country in a democratic way.
